A Klingon who wants to be a doctor is already a departure for Star Trek.

Throw in Jay-Den Kraag being the franchise's first gay Klingon, and that’s something else. Jay-Den is one of Starfleet Academy's best characters thanks to Karim Diane’s terrific performance, showing the heart underneath the gruff exterior.

Jay-Den knows he’s bucking so many Klingon traditions, yet he does it anyway to help those in need and refuses to back down. That makes it easier to accept his romance with Kyle Jokovich.

The relationship between Jay-Den and Kyle was written magnificently, starting on opposite sides yet quickly bonding. A Klingon flustered at romance is a fun sight, especially with two good actors. That it doesn’t change Jay-Den’s demeanor or is seen as strange by others makes it even better.

Kyle is willing to accommodate his boyfriend, already proving himself worthy of Jay-Den's affections. That romance alone is a bold step forward for the Trek franchise, showcasing the best romantic couple on the show.
