Episode 5, “Series Acclimation Mil,” is a highlight of Starfleet Academy's first season. It’s a terrific tribute to Deep Space Nine with SAM investigating the truth behind Benjamin Sisko’s disappearance and his legacy.

SAM is aided by Professor Illa (Tawny Newsome). Illa’s prompts included strange metaphors that still worked as encouragement, and she seemed to simply be an offbeat teacher who guided SAM on her research.

The twist was the reveal that Illa was the latest host for Dax, as she helped SAM discover more about her old friend Sisko. It added a new dimension to this connection with Dax acting as a mentor for SAM and still up to some of her old tricks using her past experience.

Newsome added another accolade to her Trek resume, imbuing this classic character for a new generation. Sadly, we haven’t seen her since, yet it was great to see this DS9 heroine keeping the spirit of that series alive in a new form.
