One of the key relationships first featured on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is shared between Caleb Mir and Nahla Ake. Caleb was always a source of guilt for Ake after sentencing his mother to prison and leaving him on the run.

Bringing Caleb into Starfleet was a second chance for both of them, as Ake saw Caleb’s potential, which he himself had ignored. She thus took it upon herself to break through his mistrust and show him how Starfleet could be his future. Nahla didn't make it too easy for Caleb, though, especially in the beginning.

Ake played the “tough love” approach to trick Caleb into finding the solutions to challenges on his own. It was smart how she’d challenge his pride and played some unique games. Yet, Nahla was always quite proud of him.

Caleb likewise overcame his mistrust to see Ake as a strong mentor and an inspiration worthy of respect. Ake didn’t need to be a mother to Caleb, only a teacher, which she excelled at.
