And the adventures continue…

Sadly, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy won’t be warp-speeding beyond a second season after news of the streaming show’s cancellation dropped back in March. However, those fans of SFA’s cadet Jay-Den Kraag can continue reading about the young Klingon in the pages of a new comic book series aptly titled Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – Lost Contact.

And the actor who portrays the Klingon with aspirations of becoming a Starfleet medical officer is so excited for Jay-Den to be gracing the pages of a comic book. With a copy of issue No. 1 in hand, the actor who portrays Kraag, Karim Diane, sounded off on social media by posting the following video and writing (via Instagram): “My FIRST comic !! 😭😭 OUT NOW!!”

Diane continued by writing in a separate comment:

“I really want to reiterate how childlike this launch makes me feel. I was a HUGE X-Men nerd growing up and I still am. new issue drops used to give me butterflies 😭. I’d run to the store, race home, read it in one sitting, then place it on my shelf like a trophy. This feels just like that again. I can’t wait to read it 😭👏🏾👏🏾”

As Diane mentioned in the video, Lost Contact is scheduled as a five-issue run. The first comic book is already available for those who are interested in picking up a copy, but Jay-Den Kraag isn’t the only character making the transition from the streaming series to the world of comic books.

Fellow characters Caleb Mir, Genesis Lythe, Tarima Sadal, and even Jay-Den’s love interest, Kyle, are all present and accounted for in Lost Contact No. 1. The cadets are unexpectedly challenged during a simple survey simulation when a storm breaks off contact between the youngsters and their instructors on the USS Athena.

Lost Contact No. 2 is due out later this month on May 27, and the cadets who have been cut off from the Athena find themselves being hunted! Personally, as intriguing as issue No. 1 and No. 2 sound, I wish this story would have been presented as another streaming episode.

I understand Trekkies having to turn to must-read novels and comic books for adventures that haven’t and/or won’t happen on the small or big screen, like when The Original Series crew met Doctor Who, or when The Next Generation came across the X-Men.

But Starfleet Academy needs more seasons and episodes on streaming, rather than being recreated in comic book form. Lost Contact No. 1 looks great, but it should have played out on Paramount+ — I’m just saying. But congrats to Karim Diane, who couldn’t be happier that his character, Jay-Den Kraag, is now a member of the comics community.

Live long and prosper, Trekkies!
