Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is now streaming on Paramount+, garnering a variety of opinions and reviews from fans and critics alike. From callbacks to legacy characters to those that are new and exciting, the show has much to offer.
Recently, the Steve Varley Show had the opportunity to interview Paul Giamatti about the differences in how the Golden Globe-winning actor approaches people compared to his half-Klingon, half-Tellarite character, and whether he approaches them in a similar manner as the "sociopathic" Nus Baraka would. Giamatti said:
"Oh, um, not as an actor, I don't. I mean, I kind of approach everybody just to play with them and see what happens. I mean, he's a very calculating person. He's a very, the character's a very manipulative sort of sociopathic kind of person. So, sure, he's got a bit of a--he's got a bit of a take on different people and how to sort of manipulate them, yeah."
Giamatti added:
"But, uh, me as an actor, no. I just [...] I'm looking to other people to help me, uh, get through the day. So you know, it's like, anybody I'm open to, I'm looking for other people to help me as an actor. So, I'm open to anybody and anything that they have to give me."
Some actors play the villain so well that they themselves get hate, such as Jack Gleeson from Game of Thrones, who played the cruel and despicable King Joffrey. It's such a fine line to walk that even experienced performers have trouble separating the actor from the antagonist.
This apparently isn't the case for Giamatti, though, as it's clear he has Nus Braka well in hand. It's going to be interesting to watch this character grow because if it's one thing Star Trek writers do well, it's creating antagonists we fans love to hate!
