Arrr, matey!

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy hasn’t even premiered yet, but there’s rightfully a buzz around the upcoming show thanks in large part to showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau casting the Sideways genius of Paul Giamatti as the vengeful half-Klingon, half-Tellarite villain, Nus Braka. Giamatti has said in past interviews that his lifelong dream was to portray a Klingon, However, while appearing at the CCXP in Sao Paulo, Brazil earlier this month, the Golden Globe-winning actor (The Holdovers) also revealed that his Klingon is much like a pirate. Giamatti explained via TrekMovie.com by saying:

“Well, he’s a pirate, kind of. He’s a little bit of a pirate. He’s a kind of [...] He’s got his finger in every kind of criminal activity. He’s a smuggler. He’s a trafficker, of all kinds. And he leads a group […], who are pirates, basically. So, he’s been all over the galaxy. And he’s a lowlife. And he’s a nobody, who thinks he’s a somebody. And he likes to clown around and play the fool and stuff. But he’s a very dangerous psychopath underneath it all.”

I can’t wait to see what an actor the caliber of Paul Giamatti can do with a fantastic new character like Nus Braka. The A-list actor must have had so much fun just portraying the disagreeable dispositions of a Tellarite and a Klingon, to say nothing of a pirate, which should make the Trek worth taking all on its own.

Are you as excited as I am to see the over-the-top Nus Braka go up against Oscar-winner Holly Hunter’s Nahla Ake and the young batch of talented actors portraying the Federation’s cadets? Share your thoughts and comments with us on the Redshirts Always Die Facebook and X pages. And Star Trek: Starfleet Academy drops Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026, on Paramount Plus.

Live long and prosper, Trekkies!
