Star Trek: Starfleet Academy fans are rallying to bring back the show for a third season after its recent cancellation with an online petition that has amassed over 20,000 signatures at the time of this writing. People from all over the world are lending their names to the call to save the show, which many believe was axed much too early.

The petition saw a significant jump in signatures over the weekend from around 10,000 supporters on Saturday, March 28, to 21,465 on Sunday evening (March 29), which is good news for those who want to see more of Captain Nahla Ake and her diverse class of Starfleet Academy cadets.

"We urge Paramount to listen to the voices of millions of fans who are yearning for more adventures in the Starfleet Academy," an excerpt from the petition reads. "Renewing the show for a third season is not just a business decision; it's about continuing a legacy, honoring storytelling, and nurturing a global community of Trekkers."

"Help us keep exploring the universe through the eyes of our beloved characters," the excerpt continues. "Sign this petition to show your support for the renewal of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy for a third season, and ensure the continuation of this amazing journey. Together, we can make the future possible.

The hope for a better future has always been at the heart of Star Trek, from The Original Series right up to Starfleet Academy. The characters from each series share that hope, no matter where they exist in the timeline.

The petition reminds us all that Starfleet Academy gives today's younger viewers what past series have given fans — compelling characters, complex personal relationships, humor, a beautiful starship, and multi-layered antagonists.

As always, the exploration in the series is not only about exploring space, but also the beautiful (and at times painful) exploration of the self and what it means to become a whole person.

The rising numbers of signatures on the petition is a clear sign that Starfleet Academy has its fans, including yours truly. While the show had its uneven moments during the first season, this is common of most series in the franchise.

This is the season where character development begins and the backstories of the characters start to unfold. It's a terrible disservice to the franchise, the actors and crew, and the viewers to dismantle all of this when the series has so much potential.

The diversity of the crew is a major draw for me, and characters like Lura Thok, Jett Reno, and Nahla Ake are some of the most unique to appear on a Star Trek series since Deep Space Nine, which had a highly diverse cast.

The storylines, such as the revelation of Klingon cadet Jay-Den Kraag's sexuality, lend themselves to many viewers feeling seen and validated, which has always been a key component of the franchise.

You can give Starfleet Academy a future by signing the petition and letting Paramount Skydance know that we want to see more of this series, its characters, and its stories of a better tomorrow. And for more Star Trek content, visit the Redshirts Always Die Facebook and X pages.
