Star Trek: Starfleet Academy actor cleverly improvised many of his lines

Karim Diane pulled back the curtain on why Star Trek: Starfleet Academy breakout cadet Ocam Sadal feels so chaotically alive on screen, and it all comes down to Romeo Carere’s willingness to blow past the script in the best possible way. Co-showrunner Noga Landau is already teasing that season 1 was just the beginning, promising that the series is about to “go full Ocam” when the Betazoid wild card returns for season 2. Diane started the interview with ScreenRant by saying:

"Romeo is like a genius. He is such a talented actor. And I don't say that lightly about a lot like that. I really, really mean that. It's been such a joy seeing him work. And I think it's important to note that a lot of his lines are improvised."

Diane continued:

"Not everything that he says obviously makes the show, but this guy sometimes says the most ridiculous things that are so funny and are so left field that they just break the entire set down. Everybody just starts laughing. And he is not afraid to go for it and just really find the line and just run past it, and blurt it out. And it makes for an awesome character. Yeah, I really love Romeo and Ocam."

Landau added:

"If you like Ocam in season 1, buckle up. We go full Ocam in season 2. I can't wait for you to see that."

Those comments in their interview track perfectly with how Ocam has evolved across the first season, going from Tarima’s seemingly secondary brother to the unexpected comic engine of the freshman class once he moves into the dorm with Caleb and Darem. (Continued on page 2...)
