The featured character in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy so far is Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta). The rebellious youth, pushed into the Academy, is featured in the spotlight right off the bat, and is becoming a very intriguing character. Speaking to TrekMovie.com, Rosta revealed that he even studied the franchise before starting his role, with an emphasis on The Original Series and The Next Generation. The actor said:
"I went back. I went and watched the older series. I started with The Original Series, and then I went on to TNG… I just took bits and pieces, I couldn’t watch all of it. I didn’t have enough time."
Many Star Trek fans will agree with Rosta’s admission that there’s just way too much Trek to study, but he has grasped the universe well. His role is vital as Caleb, serving as the audience's avatar, letting us see the Academy through his eyes. Caleb's main reason for joining is to find his missing mother (Tatiana Maslany), although Chancellor Ake (Holly Hunter) clearly sees more in the young man.
And it appears Rosta's research into TOS and TNG paid off, because his performance as Caleb does exhibit traits similar to a couple of famous Trek names.
