Starfleet Academy's '300th Night' is way better than its low rating (and this is why)

6.7 out of 10 stars doesn't do director Jonathan Frakes' episode justice.

1. Holly Hunter's acting

While we hadn't seen Nus Braka (Paul Giamatti) since the episode "Come, Let's Away," his machinations are revealed in this episode, which could potentially destroy huge areas of Federation space and end billions of lives.

Braka and his piracy network, the Venari Ral, have essentially trapped all Federation space and its ships inside a wall of Omega-47 mines. Only Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter), part of her crew, and the USS Athena remain outside the box, cut off from Starfleet and the Federation.

I need to comment on Holly Hunter's acting during this scene. While she's been delivering Nahla Ake realness since the very first episode, she took hold during this episode and wrung out every available bit of emotion a captain might feel in this awful situation.

Nahla always stands strong, though, and Hunter gives us glimpses of those emotions, though carefully held in check, as she realizes that Braka now has the upper hand and what's at stake.

"300th Night" may not have received rave reviews, but it's way better than its 6.7 IMDb rating indicates. Have you scene the episode?
