6. 'Kids These Days'
The pilot for any TV show is a vital first step. Like other Trek series, the SFA premiere gives us a quick intro to the characters and the overall setup. It does it well, starting with flashbacks that establish the connection among Ake, Caleb, and Braka.
The action-filled start flows perfectly into Caleb arriving at the Academy and quickly meeting the other characters. Anyone who’s attended college orientation can relate to the madcap pace here and that realism connects the audience to the drama.
There is some action and we get the delightful debut of Paul Giamatti chewing up the scenery as Braka. There are also surprises like Darem’s true form and Ake’s own backstory. It’s a great start to the show, mixing action, drama, humor and laying the groundwork for the good show that will follow. It may not be the best Star Trek pilot, yet it works to make sure SFA captivates from the start.
