5. 'The Life of the Stars'

This episode enjoyed some press due to bringing in Discovery’s beloved Sylvia Tilly to help the Academy cadets through their ordeals. Her decision to put them through a production of Our Town was a surprisingly effective storytelling choice.
A genius connection is on Tarima’s own struggles, and Zoe Steiner gets great material to showcase Tarima’s mood swings, jealousy of Genesis and Caleb, yet becoming accepted by the rest of the group. It’s a stellar development for her.
The meat of the episode is SAM, whose “glitches” become life-threatening. After dismissing SAM for the majority of the season, The Doctor tries to save her, which brings back painful memories of his own holographic family. Robert Picardo has one of his best performances in ages with The Doctor doing all in his power and beyond to help his new charge. The emotional climax is quite gratifying and caps off one of the more character-driven episodes of the season.
