Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1 is in the books, and filming has officially wrapped on season 2. The stakes will be raised in the second year, which includes finding a villain that can top Paul Giamatti's fantastic Nus Braka, who won't return for sophomore year.
Speaking to TrekMovie.com, co-showrunner Noga Landau teased that season 2’s villain is going to be bigger and badder than Nus could ever be. Landau said, "The villain of season 2 is not just a person. In a very classic Trek sense, it is more an impossible dilemma that we find ourselves in as Starfleet."
Landau added about next season's ending: "I would say it is a cliffhanger. It is a cliffhanger at the end of season 2."
Just who this villain is can be a very compelling question. We’re probably well over using the Borg, yet it’s intriguing to imagine what races could be new threats in the 32nd century.
Perhaps the Dominion has secretly been rebuilding itself during The Burn and is ready to once again take on the Alpha Quadrant. There’s also the Romulans, who are always up to some chicanery and likely more dangerous trying to survive in this new galaxy.
We would need a top actor for the role, and lately, Trek has been able to get some serious A-listers on board, including Oscar winners like Jamie Lee Curtis and Holly Hunter. My dream pick? Newly minted Best Actor winner Michael B. Jordan as a conniving Romulan. Given he’s already been part of the MCU, adding Trek to his resume would be perfect.
We’ll see how it works, but it makes the wait for Starfleet Academy season 2 even bigger! For more Star Trek content, visit the Redshirts Always Die Facebook and X pages. And Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is now streaming on Paramount+.
