The kiss that shocked TV

The Star Trek: The Original Series episode's forced kiss between Captain Kirk (Shatner) and Lt. Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) has long been cited as one of American television’s first interracial kisses, airing at the height of the civil rights era.

Network executives feared it would inflame viewers in the American South, and several stations refused to air the episode entirely, effectively censoring a moment that has since become foundational to Trek’s progressive reputation.

That history is exactly what Shatner is invoking: the idea that what is branded “too political” or “too progressive” in one decade often becomes celebrated canon in the next. (Continued on page 3...)
