Aimed squarely at Starfleet Academy critics

William Shatner’s post arrived just hours after news broke that Paramount+ canceled Starfleet Academy following its second season, with reporting tying the decision to cost concerns but also acknowledging months of culture‑war backlash online.

The series, set in the 32nd century, leaned into the Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations (IDIC) Vulcan philosophy with storylines including LGBT and alien cadets, which some detractors derided as “woke” before episodes even finished airing.

By highlighting how stations once pulled the Kirk/Uhura kiss for being too boundary‑pushing, Shatner effectively equated modern anti‑“woke” celebrations of the show’s demise with the same fear‑driven conservatism that tried to muzzle Star Trek in the 1960s. (Continued on page 4...)
