'Star Trek is different for everyone'

William Shatner reminded fans in follow-up remarks that every new Trek era, from The Next Generation to Enterprise, was first written off as "not Star Trek."

"Star Trek is different for everyone," he contended, asking fans to acknowledge that the franchise existed as a moral thought experiment about human growth as much as an exciting space fantasy.

This framing serves as a subdued justification of Starfleet Academy's diverse cast and themes, presenting them as the most recent manifestation of a decades-long effort to overcome contemporary prejudice rather than as a departure from precedent.
