Worf and Riker in 'The Outcast'

In TNG’s “The Outcast,” Commander William Riker falls in love with Soren, a member of the ostensibly genderless J’naii who secretly identifies as female, and their relationship exposes how violently J’naii society polices gender nonconformity.

When Soren is arrested and sentenced to forced “psychotectic” treatment meant to erase her identity, Riker decides to violate the Prime Directive and mount a rescue, fully aware he could lose his Starfleet career.

Before he leaves, Lt. Worf confronts him and makes it clear he knows exactly what Riker is planning, then offers to go along despite the risk. When Riker hesitates, Worf answers with the line that has since become one of his defining declarations of loyalty: “A warrior does not let a friend face danger alone.” In context, it is not just a colorful proverb; it is Worf staking his honor and commission on the belief that standing by a friend against injustice matters more than following the rules.
