Ever since the new spinoff series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was announced way back in 2023, fans have been been waiting patiently for the show to make its premiere. We still have a fair bit of waiting to go until the show finally makes its debut on Paramount+ sometime in 2026, but before we have even seen an episode of the new new spinoff, we already have an update on season 2!

Trek Movie caught up with science fiction novelist and frequent Star Trek writer and producer Kirsten Beyer to chat about Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, working on the first season, and navigating "800 years" of Star Trek lore on these projects. Within the interview, Beyer managed to sneak in a tease about season 2, which seems to be further along in the process than fans might expect.

Late last year, Paramount+ revealed that a second season of the spinoff series is in development, and that continues to be the case ahead of the show's official premiere next year. Now, Beyer revealed that the writers are deep into the process of creating the scripts for season 2 and that cameras will begin rolling much sooner than you think. Check out what she said below!

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 begins filming "very, very soon"

Even though she wasn't super forthcoming with details about Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2, writer and co-executive producer Kirsten Beyer did share that she's currently writing her episode for the second season right now. That seems to suggest that Beyer will only be writing one episode of season 2 after writing or co-writing three episodes of the first season.

In addition to revealing that she's writing her episode of season 2, Beyer also confirmed that Starfleet Academy's next batch of episodes are "supposed to start shooting very, very soon." Earlier in August 2025, reports surfaced that Starfleet Academy season 2 would begin filming in September 2025 in Toronto and be in production alongside Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 5.

Beyer's exciting update appears to confirm that filming kicks off right on track within the next month, though production listings suggest that filming stars on Aug. 27 and continues for the rest of the year and into 2026 after being in pre-production since June. That's exactly what we want to hear! Next to an official release date for season 1, of course. But that should come soon, too.

We have already seen some first-look footage from the first season far in advance of the series premiere, and as fans know, showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landua have mapped out a four-season plan to track the four years of college for the show's crop of students at Starfleet Academy. It's a thrilling prospect to have a limited run that could always continue with more spinoffs!
