In my last review, I guessed that this episode would open with Syrrik either punching Leon in the face or smooching him, and I was correct in the latter! Author Jarrett Melendez's pacing keeps the moment in between chapters filled with high stakes for Syrrik and Leon.
Waiting for the next chapter is like holding your breath a moment before turning the page of a serial comic and then plunging back into the story. I admit, I cheered a bit at that long-awaited kiss!
Melendez also uses flashbacks to continue this story, which nearly every series in the Star Trek franchise has. Where would we be without episodes like "The Menagerie" (Parts I and II TOS,) and "Tapestry" from Star Trek: The Next Generation? It's a clever writing tool, and Melendez uses it without missing a beat.
When Leon decides to run on the treadmill to clear his mind, it's as if he's chasing the past, back to when he first met Churi and Syrrik. The memories are vivid and full of innocence before Syrrik pulls away from his group of friends and yields to the demands of his father and the responsibilities that come with his obedience.
