Stargazers: a Star Trek Story is heating up as it continues to tell the story of Leon Foxwell and his pals galavanting around Deep Space 9.
Leon’s childhood friend turned frenemy, turned romantic interest, Syrrik, is continuing his advance towards Leon. And Syrrik’s own curiosity about the romance is a great piece of storytelling that makes this webcomic read a serious page-turner.
With that in mind, the following pages examine Stargazers episode 14's character development, artwork, and storytelling, which is penned by Jarrett Melendez.
1. Character development
Stargazers No. 14 picks up right where episode 13 left off, with Syrrik greeting Leon at the salon and asking him to talk.
Syrrik’s character arc is immediately altered when he admits to Leon that perhaps he is right about his father’s shortcomings. It marks the first time Syrrik has actively expressed this thought through words rather than with facial expressions.
By continuing to walk with Leon and open up, Syrrik’s character is continually pushed towards a brighter outlook with greater freedom. However, it was what happened next that gave us an even deeper look into Syrrik’s mind.
The two continued to walk down the promenade with Syrrik apologizing to Leon for kissing him. He divulged that no one had ever spoken to him so kindly, and he acted impulsively. It is sad to hear that no one has ever told Syrrik how great he is, but almost sadder that he felt the need to apologize to Leon, who had already reciprocated in their kiss.
Syrrik continues to wonder out loud if Leon hates him because of the latter's statements in the previous episode. This demonstrates that Syrrik views the world very black and white, and that if Leon thought he hated him, then Leon must hate Syrrik back. That is likely programming from Jato, Syrrik’s stuck-up father.
The conversation ultimately culminates in the two coming to terms with each other’s differences. Syrrik let loose on a rant about everything he envies about Leon, and that seemed to unlock a hidden piece of Syrrik’s character as he even agreed to help out with Leon and the upcoming talent show, something that seemed impossible at the beginning of the series.
Of course, the episode would not be complete without the two sharing another kiss, setting the stage for what appears to be a burgeoning passionate relationship.
