Hello again, Redshirt readers! We're back with another Star Trek: Stargazers review.
The previous chapter gave us plenty of buildup, and it feels like the relationship Syrrik and Leon have fostered is turning into something more serious than anyone expected, least of all Syrrik's father, Jato.
With that in mind, let's dive into Stargazers episode No. 20 and examine how author Jarrett Melendez and Kisai Entertainment's team of artist bring Syrrik and Kenga's unexpected conversation to life through the webcomic's compelling artwork, storytelling, and character development.
1. Storytelling through thoughtful dialogue
In this chapter, Melendez's storytelling throws readers an unexpected curveball when Syrrik turns to a surprising source after Jato sees his son and Leon kissing.
In Stargazers episode 19, Jato said he's known about the relationship for some time, which is something Syrrik likely didn't expect. He then goes to Kenga in this issue of the webcomic series because Syrrik knows her relationship with her father is strained, too.
Melendez uses some truly beautiful dialog between Syrrik and Kenga, who tells him that Jato failed him, as a parent, not the other way around. And Kenga says to Syrrik, "You deserve better," which actually leads to him tearing up.
The emotional reaction Syrrik experiences is one that will undoubtedly resonate with all young readers, particiular those who have difficult relationships with their parents.
The search for one's true self is a common theme in Star Trek (and not without controversy), but the way Kenga and Syrrik come to respect each other and bond over their fathers' overbearing natures, with a lot of understanding and a bit of ironic humor, keeps the story moving forward with a natural flow.
