2. Storytelling

While breaking the fourth wall humor isn't new to the world of Star Trek, a la Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) finally having the last word in The Original Series episode "Journey to Babel," Melendez uses it here in Stargazers episode 6 to comment on his own characters and their quirks.

My favorite moment is this observation by the writer as Churi and Kenga join Leon at his home to have a meal: "A chill walk (I'm beginning to suspect Leon doesn't know what adventure is) with the gang later." It's so relatable!

It's often difficult for us to silence our inner critic, whether we're reading or writing. Breaking the narrative wall is a writing gamble because it can feel jolting, especially when readers already have something of an inner voice. For example, mine is usually John de Lancie. However, in this case, it's used so casually that it doesn't break that bubble and pull you out of the tale.
