SNW EPs 'loved' this Star Trek actor (& her character's unforgettable story followed)

“Then we just loved her […] So, we kept wanting to bring her back.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds benefits greatly not only from its stellar cast but also from the recurring talent, which helps add even more elan to the streaming series. Undoubtedly, Paul Wesley’s portrayal of James T. Kirk comes to mind immediately for most fans, but actress Melanie Scrofano won’t soon be forgotten after playing Captain Christopher Pike’s (Anson Mount) love interest over the first three seasons of SNW. And the showrunners’ love of Scrofano is why the role of Marie Batel expanded over the years.

In an interview recently posted online, Akiva Goldsman explained how much he and fellow showrunner Henry Alonso Myers “loved” what Scrofano brought to the table as Captain Batel and how the character’s role grew over the years. Goldsman said (per Awards Radar): “I mean, it [sacrificial story arc] became the plan. It was not the plan when we introduced her in the pilot. I mean, I wrote the pilot before we knew there was a show.”

Goldsman continued by saying, “So, it was sort of an idea of somebody for a then quite isolated and hermetic Christopher Pike to talk to. And then we just loved her, Melanie. We were just like, ‘Wow, awesome.’ And so, we kept wanting to bring her back and we did in season two. And so, then we built out this arc. And so, from that moment, it was planned. We knew it was a one season arc.”

Sadly, for fans like myself who also love Scrofano’s portrayal of Captain Batel, it seems like the end of the road for the recurring character. Even the actress herself has said how she’ll miss playing Pike’s love interest and the Starfleet commander. However, Batel went out at warp speed and with the noblest of efforts as her transformation into the Beholder enabled her to make the ultimate sacrifice — and save the lives of the USS Enterprise’s crew. Goldsman said during the same sit-down:

“We were sort of enamored with the idea of giving Pike a real love interest rather than what is typically more sort of romance of the week or I only left my ship, depending on which show you’re in. We wanted to experiment with the idea of something more permanent, especially with somebody who knows that permanence is not going to be his long game.”

Batel came a long way from merely being someone the scruffy bearded Pike could lean on in the Strange New Worlds series premiere. Ultimately immortalized as the “beholding” statue of sacrifice, I still feel — hope is more like it — that Star Trek fans may have the opportunity to see the Beholder again before the show’s fifth and final season streams on Paramount+.
