Are the results logical?
Unfortunately, despite the incredible response Star Trek: Strange New Worlds received from critics this year, season 4 of the streaming series failed to crack the Nielsen streaming TV programs Top 10.
Now, while the official chart was released on the heels of SNW’s new puppet episode, “Level-Five Transporter Accident,” the Nielsen report released on Friday, Aug. 21, only records the data from the week of July 20, through July 26.
Therefore, it’s simply the Strange New Worlds time-traveling series premiere, “Valles Marineris,” which debuted on Thursday, July 23, that didn’t make the cut on Nielsen’s Top 10.
So, the show still has a shot at making the streaming/TV program chart in the following weeks, which is a feat that season 1 of the divisive Starfleet Academy could not accomplish.
At the time of this writing, on the strength of its latest episode, “Level-Five Transporter Accident,” Strange New Worlds is currently ranked No. 8 worldwide and No. 5 in the United States on the Paramount+ Top 10, according to FlixPatrol.
I jumped on Paramount+ (Aug. 21), and Strange New Worlds is just barely in the “Top 10 Now” at No. 9. So, I’m not surprised SNW wasn’t listed among Nielsen’s latest ranking of the most popular programs, given its performance with many fans this season.
Despite critics’ reviews resulting in the science fiction series being “Certified Fresh” at 89 percent, the fact is that some fans simply aren’t responding well to the numerous genre pieces being released week to week.
As a result, Strange New Worlds’ Popcornmeter rating, formerly the Rotten Tomatoes audience score, is much lower than its 89-percent Tomatometer rating: only 56 percent. To put that in perspective, only SNW season 3 has a worse Popcornmeter score (52 percent) out of the entire series.
Personally, I’ve truly enjoyed Strange New Worlds season 4. My favorite episodes so far have been the horror episode “The Griffin Incident” and the puppet episode, “Level-Five Transporter Accident.” In addition to being a lifelong Trekkie, though, I’m a certified Muppets and scary film fanatic, which explains my affinity for these particular genre pieces.
