2. Acting: Celia Rose Gooding plays two Uhuras
Celia Rose Gooding is the episode 10's anchor, playing both a younger Uhura who is still finding her confidence as a lieutenant and an older Uhura shaped by years of experience and grief.
The performance makes the distinction clear without reducing either version to a gimmick. Present Uhura is alert, determined, and frustrated that nobody else can hear Scotty’s cries for help. Future Uhura carries the exhaustion of someone who has mourned a colleague and then been forced to question whether the memory of that loss is even stable.
Their eventual conversation gives Gooding room to show how much the character has changed while preserving a recognizable core. Both Uhuras listen closely, hold on to details others dismiss, and insist that empathy is not a weakness in a scientific crisis. The episode makes that continuity more meaningful than the future Uhura’s visual nod to Nichelle Nichols’ classic hairstyle.
Martin Quinn also makes Scotty’s danger matter. His early scenes establish a shy but sincere interest in asking Uhura out, which gives the looming disaster a personal edge. Scotty is not simply a figure audiences know must survive because of later canon. He is a young officer whose future feels newly fragile at the exact moment he begins to imagine a fuller life.
