“He gave his life to save us.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is doing something brilliant and highly unexpected in season 4, which co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers revealed in a brand-new interview. The upcoming season, which debuts in just under two weeks, will feature a tragic and beloved character from the Trek movies who never got much of a chance to develop on screen — one who will play an important role in the life of James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) on SNW.

Yes, Kirk’s son, David Marcus, is officially going to appear in Strange New Worlds season 4, and Myers discussed the decision to include him while speaking with SFX Magazine (per Cinemablend): “I don’t want to call it a rewrite, but it’s like a rethink.”

Myers continued by saying:

"The experience of David was not a part of the series because they didn’t really figure David out until the movies. Kirk is heroic, and none of us wanted to imagine that he is a lousy father, so that offered a lot of opportunities about how to get into his mind, emotionally."

Unfortunately, at the time of this writing, the young actor portraying David hasn’t been revealed, nor has the specific episode(s) that Kirk’s son will appear in.

I for one am delighted to learn that David will show up sometime in Strange New Worlds season 4 because he was one of my favorite original characters from the films.

For those who are new to the Star Trek fandom, David Marcus showed up for the first time in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) and was portrayed by the late Merritt Butrick.

Unfortunately, David’s tenure was cut short when he was forced to sacrifice his life to save Lt. Saavik (Robin Curtis) and teenage Spock (Stephen Manley) on the Genesis planet in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984).

Meeting his estranged son in The Wrath of Khan turned into a beautiful relationship by the film’s end only to be needlessly severed in its sequel two years later — and it was a devastating blow for Admiral Kirk (William Shatner). “He gave his life to save us,” Savvik told Kirk when the Enterprise’s commander finally arrived on the Genesis planet.

My next question is probably an easy one to answer, but I’ll ask anyway. Will David’s mother Carol will also appear in Strange New Worlds season 4? Perhaps, she simply drops him off to visit with Kirk (Paul Wesley) while he is on the USS Farragut or visiting the Enterprise — I assume the latter, so that there’s a chance for the youngster to interact with more SNW characters.

Myers added in the same sit-down: “Every new thing is like going back and trying to reimagine the things that we know now, as if we were doing it then. That’s actually the joy of doing a prequel. You get to live in the moment, knowing the future, showing things that they probably hadn’t planned to do back in the day.”
