Conclusion
By the end of Strange New Worlds season 4's ninth episode, La’An starts to understand that hope does not make her naïve and that letting people in does not make her weak.
That realization gives “Once La’An a Time” its emotional payoff. The Elysian Kingdom is still every bit as strange and playful as it needs to be, but what La’An takes away from the experience feels surprisingly grounded. She can protect herself without shutting herself off from the possibility of a happier life.
That balance is what makes the episode work. Strange New Worlds gets to have fun with the castles, magic, romance, and fairy-tale absurdity, while still giving La’An a story that genuinely moves her character forward. Beneath all the silliness, “Once La’An a Time” is about learning that survival is not the only thing worth fighting for.
