It’s too bad fans must wait until the Strange New Worlds series finale to see them.
Star Trek fans witnessed Paul Wesley’s Captain James T. Kirk of the USS Enterprise in action for the very first time during the Strange New Worlds season 4 finale, “Tomorrow’s Enterprise. Unfortunately, the full crew under Kirk’s command — minus Pavel Chekov from The Original Series — won’t show up until the SNW series finale.
However, when asked about the Strange New Worlds series finale, Wesley was quick to tout the arrival of actors Thomas Jane and Kai Murakami. Wesley said (per Collider): “I know that some of the magic of TOS, The Original Series, was the chemistry that all those characters had with one another — all those actors had with one another, I should say — and I will say that when we were shooting, I felt that. I felt this kind of like, ‘Oh, this is working. He feels like Bones,’ and ‘Oh, he feels like Sulu.’”
Thomas Jane takes up the mantle of Dr. Leonard McCoy in the Strange New Worlds series finale, while newcomer Kai Murakami portrays Hikaru Sulu. “It just kind of clicked,” Wesley continued during the same sit-down. “We all kind of clicked in terms of just our chemistry on screen, and so I'm very excited for people to see it because I do think it has a similar kind of magical quality to it that is not necessarily explainable.”
Personally, I hate the fact that McCoy and Sulu are only being included in one installment of Strange New Worlds season 5 — the series finale, which is episode 6. After all, I’ve been a huge fan of Jane’s since he portrayed Frank Castle in 2004's The Punisher, who goes up against John Travolta’s hotheaded Howard Saint.
I know there are a lot of character arcs to tie up before the series finale of Strange New Worlds, but I would've loved to seen Kirk, McCoy, and Mr. Spock (Ethan Peck) in more episodes together, especially since Wesley was so happy with the chemistry he shared with Jane and Murakami while shooting the show’s swan song.
