“We do work to transform my Spock…”
It shouldn’t surprise fans that one of the most fascinating Star Trek: Strange New Worlds characters is none other than actor Ethan Peck’s Mr. Spock. Over the years, Trekkies have watched the beloved Vulcan evolve closer and closer to what the character becomes in The Original Series. And Peck even admits that his Spock is “a little more emotional” than Leonard Nimoy’s version.
While promoting Strange New Worlds season 4 at this year’s Comic Con Experience (CCXP) in Mexico City, Peck elaborated on Spock’s evolution by saying (per TrekMovie.com): “Over the years, I hope I’ve matured. And a good showrunner and a good writing staff keeps up with their actors and writes to their strengths."
"And I think they do a great job of that on this show. So, as I change — as Ethan changes — Spock changes. And we have this great sort of synergy in that way, because we can evolve together.” Peck, who has portrayed Spock since his version of the character first appeared during the second season of Star Trek: Discovery, continued by saying in the same sit-down:
“On Strange New Worlds, Spock is a little more human than the Spock you see in The Original Series, portrayed by the great Leonard Nimoy. We do work to transform my Spock, who’s a little more emotional, maybe a little more sensitive to the more computational, analytical Spock you see in The Original Series. I think they’ve done a great job with that.”
One of the things I love most about Peck’s portrayal on Strange New Worlds is the way Spock is allowed to explore other avenues the iconic character wasn’t afforded on The Original Series nearly 60 years ago. For instance, it was extremely gratifying to see the showrunners expand Spock and Christine Chapel's tiny flirtation from TOS and turn it into an integral, full-blown relationship as a part of SNW.
Personally, I’m most interested about just how long Spock keeps dancing with La’an Noonien Singh (Christina Chong), and if things become more serious between them in season 4 and/or 5 of Strange New Worlds. All the fans know that Peck’s Spock will eventually match up with Nimoy’s version by the series finale, but, hopefully, SNW Spock will continue surprising us until the end finally arrives.
