Will Newsome's Star Trek project still happen?

Mixing Star Trek with pure comedy can be tricky. Every series had its share of comedic episodes, with some better than others. However, if anyone knows how to find the right balance, it’s Tawny Newsome.
The actress knows Star Trek thanks to voicing the role of Mariner on Lower Decks, a show that not only was hilarious but also made some deep cuts into Trek history. She even played the role in live-action on a terrific episode of Strange New Worlds. So Newsome knows how to bring the laughs while still respecting Trek lore and the fandom.
Newsome praised the executives she has been in contact with, but the project was originally announced by CBS Studios in 2024, a full year before Paramount and Skydance officially merged in 2025. The actress said during the same interview:
“We had really great partners at the studio. I know it is rare to come away from notes with studio folks sometimes and be like, happy and be like, ‘Oh my god, that was a great idea.’ We’re excited that we got get to implement this. They really helped us shape it in a way that still felt like us. So I’m pleased.”
Will Newsome's show see the light day under the new Paramount Skydance Corporation? The actress said: "Now it’s just up to whatever creature is in the sky that controls all this.” We can hope it all works out, as a Trek comedy series is long overdue, and Newsome’s energy lends well to how this could be a new hit for the franchise.
