“Our focus is obviously all the great Paramount IP that we have."
Paramount recently revealed that the company will be boldly going forward by increasing its focus on the modern-day gaming industry with the announcement of the newly formed Paramount Games Studio. And it didn’t take PGS long to shift from impulse power to warp speed as the news of the video game Star Trek: Shadow Frontier followed only two days later.
Star Trek is but one of many intellectual properties Paramount Games Studio can convert into exciting video games, though. Other IP like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mission: Impossible, Top Gun, and Transformers are also at PGS’ beck and call. And pardon the pun, but storytelling will be paramount moving forward. President of PGS and EVP of Corporate Strategy and Development Tony Driscoll said (per Variety):
“Games are no longer an extension of the business; they’re a core driver of storytelling, community and growth across Paramount.”
Trek is clearly one of the most popular intellectual properties at Paramount Games Studio’s disposal, but when the Paramount Skydance Corporation merger with Warner Bros. Discovery becomes official, gaming will become a whole new ball game. PGS will not only be able to crank out more Star Trek titles but also games focused on Harry Potter, the DCU, and even the Game of Thrones universe.
Executive Vice President, Head of Games, Dan Prigg, addressed this by saying, “Obviously, that’s [expansion with Warner Bros.] on everyone’s mind, but we have to treat it internally as business as usual. I know we have enough to work on ourselves, and so our focus is obviously all the great Paramount IP that we have. And then when something changes, we’ll tackle that head-on.”
I’m delighted that two new Star Trek games are coming soon: Shadow Frontier and Outposts Unknown. However, Paramount Games Studio didn’t waste any time announcing the highly anticipated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin video game either, which will likely have the TMNT fandom and hardcore gamers shouting “Cowabunga” when it finally drops.
At the time of this writing, TMNT: The Last Ronin hasn’t received an official release date, but you can watch the teaser announcement trailer below. Live long and prosper, Trekkies!
