The Golden Globe winner already has his favorite piece of Star Trek tech picked out, and it is exactly what many fans would choose.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight during the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy world premiere, the Oscar-nominated actor was asked which invention from the franchise he would most like to bring into his everyday life, and he did not hesitate to say: “Wow, the transporter, I guess. So, I can just get out of uncomfortable situations.”

Giamatti’s answer is the kind of dry, self-aware humor fans have come to expect from the Golden Globe winner, and it fits neatly with his new role as the villain of Starfleet Academy. Rather than citing a grand exploration tool or a powerful weapon, he zeroed in on the transporter as a gloriously practical escape hatch from awkward real-life encounters.

That small joke also hints at how comfortably he has slipped into the larger Star Trek universe. Giamatti grew up watching The Original Series with his father, so getting to play a major antagonist opposite a new generation of cadets clearly checks a lifelong box.
