Nearly a decade has passed since the last installment from J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot series hit theaters, and the actor who took over the role of Mr. Spock from Leonard Nimoy is ready to put his Vulcan ears, bangs, and trademark blue uniform on again. While appearing on Today to promote the debut of NBC’s medical drama Brilliant Minds season 2, Zachary Quinto was asked by renowned weatherman and TV personality Al Roker if there’s a chance of reuniting with Abrams on Star Trek 4. Quinto responded by saying:

“Al, you know what, get him on the phone. Let’s do this. I feel like it would be… it’s a great time. It’s been 10 years since the last film. We all love each other. We have a great time making those movies. I think we’d all love to come back together and tell one more. I think fans would be really excited by it. And I think the time is right, if you ask me."

Quinto continued by saying:

"I was in touch with him about something else recently, and sort of floated it out there that it feels like now’s the moment. So, let’s bring it back around. There’s the possibility, but I feel like there’s always the possibility. For years there’s been… there’s scripts circulating, there’s directors attached. You know, I think we just need to lock it down and clear our schedules. Let’s do it.”

Quinto’s Mr. Spock, Captain Kirk (Chris Pine), and Dr. McCoy (Karl Urban) last appeared on screen together over nine years ago in Star Trek Beyond (2016). Unfortunately, the third installment had its share of problems which undoubtedly played a part in everyone not returning for a Beyond sequel. First, Abrams stayed aboard as a producer, but he relinquished the directing chair and turned those duties over to Justin Lin — and some of the magic was sadly lost.

Second, when compared to Eric Bana’s Romulan baddie, Nero, and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Khan, Beyond’s villain, Krall, was lackluster at best — even with Idris Elba playing the inferiorly written role.

Third, the stories and action sequences provided by Beyond’s predecessors, Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), just never showed up in the third installment.

Star Trek 4 sounds like a good idea in theory, so the series can finally get back on track. However, it will be bittersweet without Anton Yelchin’s Mr. Chekov in the mix, following the actor’s untimely death back in 2016.
