Star Wars missed the boat by passing on this William Shatner 'cameo'

Ever since Star Wars beat Star Trek to the theaters in 1977 with Star Wars IV: A New Hope, there's been a sort of rivalry between the franchises and the fandom. It's all in good fun, but the two franchises share a name and a concept and are both the standard bearers of the science fiction genre.

They've been at odds a bit ever since, but again, in a more tongue-in-cheek way. In fact, by all accounts, both franchises have had great respect for each other. It's just the success of one has fueled the success of another. After all, Star Trek pivoted as hard as it did for its theatrical debut in 1979 because of the success of Star Wars. The first Trek film, Star Trek The Motion Picture could've looked very different if they weren't trying to keep pace with the new kids on the block.

Despite all of this, however, the two franchises have very rarely ever crossed over. There was the time when the Millenium Falcon had a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo in Star Trek: First Contact, but really aside from sharing a few actors, that's really been it.

Had things been different, however, we could've had another, more memorable cameo. According to an interview conducted by The Orville creator, Seth MacFarlane with George Lucas, Star Wars almost named an alien race after William Shatner. Shatner and Lucas had apparently been friends since 1977, and, according to the interview (via Giant Freaking Robot), Shatner told Lucas to name an alien species after the Star Trek icon.

Well, come the 1999 prequel trilogy, that was about to be a thing. The Neimoidians (no relation to Leonard Nimoy, we think) were a frog-like race of villains in the first two films. They were the architects of the blockade around Naboo which was the catalyst for the first film's plot. Apparently, these alien villains had a different name at first; S’hatnarians.

The name didn't stick and eventually, it was changed over, but in doing so we lost a neat little easter egg of sorts for both franchises.

Seeing how little the two franchises interreact is always a bit of a bummer. While we don't want the universes to ever be shared, we would still like to see a little more love exist between these two titanic franchises.
