One of the biggest new names in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has shared which Trek series is his favorite!

Starfleet Academy is getting big buzz thanks to the big names involved. They include Oscar winner Holly Hunter as the Academy's chancellor and captain of the USS Athena. There’s also award-winning actor Paul Giamatti as the show’s main villain, the half-Klingon, half-Tellarite Nus Braka.

Speaking in Sao Paulo, Brazil, at the CCXP 2025 convention, Giamatti shared via TrekMovie.com how his knowledge of Star Trek was “not encyclopedic” but that he was a big fan. That led to the question of which Trek series was his favorite. Giamatti said:

"My favorite series is Deep Space Nine, which I really, really love. I’ve probably – aside from the original – it’s the most I’ve seen it, over and and over and over again, the most. So that would be my favorite one. "

Giamatti’s choice in Trek shows does make sense. The actor is well known for expertly balancing high drama (his Emmy-winning turn in the HBO series John Adams) to outright comedy, such as The Hangover Part II.

Thus, it’s no wonder Giamatti was drawn to DS9. That series always had a different vibe than other Star Trek series, mostly being set on a station rather than a starship. The clashes of the Bajorans and the Federation fueled the series’ plotlines, and it was never afraid to get dark, as proven by the Dominion War storyline.

Yet Starfleet Academy could do more heartwarming and even comedic episodes that celebrate life, just the sort of thing Giamatti would enjoy. (Continued...)
