With Star Trek: Lower Decks coming to a close, everyone who worked on the show is now looking for the next chapter of their career. Everyone, but Tawny Newsome. For right now, the current and former voice actresses of Beckett Mariner have a new assignment; write the next Star Trek comedy.

As of right now, that's a tall task, as we don't know if this show will see the light of day. It's too early to tell and Paramount has a history of canceling shows that are well into development. So until it starts airing, who knows if we'll see this comedy.

It's a concern that Newsome has, but for the most part, she's very optimistic about her new show. It's a novel idea, once that has legs if it can be cultivated correctly. With comedies being hard to sell to the masses usually, it's even harder when the core audience may be wrinkled by the concept.

Yet, this idea does distance itself from some of the more beloved and sacred aspects of the franchise. A solid concept but now after some contemplation, it's sounding less like a three-camera sitcom and more like the Office.

According to Newsome (via TrekMovie.com), the new show idea has added an extra layer, with the exploits of everyone involved being broadcast to everyone across the galaxy;

“Federation outsiders serving a gleaming resort planet find out their day-to-day exploits are being broadcast to the entire quadrant.”

That type of concept has never been done in Star Trek and while overdone, could provide a unique breath of fresh air to how Star Trek has been handling its comedic side. Being able to put them in a scenario like The Office or Parks and Rec may allow for some more creativity and uniqueness to be had.

The only problem with the concept is that it doesn't always work. Welcome to Fletch and The Muppets, each had a go at the format and failed to deliver. Hopefully, a new attempt can be made and this time, the series can find a larger reach than other failed concepts have found before.
