Star Trek: Lower Decks officially came to an end on December 19th, but no one is closing the door on these characters. According to series star Tawny Newsome, in an interview she gave Variety, she said series creator "could do 10 more seasons." On top of that, the cast is all aboard for whatever McMahan has in mind.
Newsome herself would love to do a movie, and perhaps that's something Paramount+ will consider after we see how well Section 31 does when it premieres next month. One thing is for certain, no one is finished with these Lower Decks characters and not just in animation. Newsome said, "I’d love a live-action movie, because we need to see Noël and Jerry and Eugene in human form — human-ish form."
That would be a different way for the series to go and would be an even bigger wrap-up if that's the last time we hear these characters. We've already seen Mariner and Boimler in live action when they crossed over with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds so seeing the rest of the cast as their live-action characters would be icing on the cake, and something all of us want to see. How could we not?
Whether or not a movie is in Lower Decks' future, the final chapter coming to a close never means the actual end, even if, it's ten years down the road. As Newsome says, "We’ll be the next ‘Futurama.’ We’ll come back in 10 years, whatever you want.”
For those who don't know, Futurama was science fiction sitcom that aired from 1999-2003 on Fox before it was cancelled. Four direct-to-video films were made in 2007 before Comedy Central aired the films as half-hour episodes, which esentially gave the series a fifth season. After that, Comedy Central picked up the show for another twenty-six half-hour episodes and then renewed it for a seventh season in 2013. And just when fans thought it was over, Hulu picked up the series for twenty episodes in February 2002 and subsequently renewed by Hulu for two more seasons which will run through 2026. So there's plenty of potential for more of Star Trek: Lower Decks. It might just take the right streaming channel to find it!
