The Hagemans' good fortune might be Star Trek: Prodigy's doom

It's been five months since the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy released on Netflix. The streaming channel made all twenty episodes available, allowing fans an epic binge, but things have been silent since then. Netflix has made no mention of a season three renewal, despite outspoken fans who have undertaken yet another campaign.

Now, the creators of Prodigy, Kevin and Dan Hageman, are writing a live-action Lego Ninjago movie for Universal. [via Screenrant] This isn't a surprise to fans of the Ninjago television series as the brothers were the executive producers and writers for the first nine seasons. So why wouldn't they jump at the chance to write the script for a live-action movie? And it really is good news for them. For Prodigy fans? Not so much.

The Hagemans have said before that it takes quite a while to get an animated series done, and with the new responsiblity of writing a script for Ninjago, the brothers' focus isn't going to be on Prodigy...at least not for the forseeable future.

So while it's still possible Netflix could grant a season three renewal for Prodigy, it's guaranteed we won't see it anytime soon as the movie is going to have to come first. We certainly can't expect the Hagemans to turn over control of Prodigy to anyone else...nor should they! Most likely, they wouldn't even be able to begin work on Prodigy season three until after production wraps on Ninjago. This news might be the impetus Netflix needs to cancel Prodigy rather than wait three to four years for another season.

That's the problem with networks dragging their feet on renewals. Showrunners, writers, and creators have to move on to other opportunities as they become available. And that leaves the fans stuck in limbo like we have been for the past five months.
