#1 - Unique take on fight scenes
Fight scenes in most action movies may involve various forms of martial arts hand-to-hand combat that can be overdone and redundant. However, the fight scene in the Baraam hospitality space station between Yeoh's character Phillipa Georgiou and a mysterious masked assailant was elevated with more than punches and roundhouse kicks. Georgiou and the assailant, attempting to keep a bioweapon from each other, were both equipped with a device that altered their body wavelengths relative to their surroundings. The device enabled them, while fighting, to phase in and out of solid objects. Using this phasing feature to their advantage was a refreshing take on the traditional tug-of-war fight scene to obtain and control the bioweapon payload. This Section 31 fight scene reminded me of an 80’s standalone issue of the Marvel comic series X-Men in which Kitty Pryde (aka Shadowcat) skillfully used her phasing ability to single-handedly defeat an alien xenomorph creature.
