Based upon the critics' reviews and the fan feedback, it's safe to say that the Star Trek movie, Section 31, starring Michelle Yeoh, didn't turn out quite the way the executives at Paramount had envisioned. There's no nice way to say that it was a bomb, but it's the widespread consensus.
The ending was left open for a sequel, and Yeoh and the other actors in the movie are onboard to return. On top of that, there have been talks of other Star Trek streaming channel movies. So there's a strong possibiity that, if not Section 31, another Star Trek movie will be made for streaming. However, there's an old saying "once burned, twice shy," which makes me ask, will fans take a chance on another streaming movie on Paramount+ even when Skydance is in charge?
Largely, it may depend upon who writes the script as odds are very good Star Trek fans aren't going to tune in for another go at a Craig Sweeny-penned story. Even if another writer were to have a go at it, fans are still going to be uncertain about investing over one hundred minutes of their time in what could be another less than stellar outing for the franchise.
Though Section 31 has had major streaming numbers, that was simply because fans were curious. Paramount shouldn't count on even half of those fans tuning in for a future installment unless the movie is written by someone fans can get behind. Is this the point where Paramount needs to put aside the ideas for future movies and focus on series instead? None of them have been panned as badly as Section 31 so it stands to reason that you should go with what works. Whatever is decided, it's probably going to take a lot of convincing for fans to be willing to watch another streaming channel only movie in the franchise.
