Daystrom Institute Library Files: The Breen Confederacy

A fan made Daystrom Institute library file on the mysterious Breen Confederacy of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Star Trek YouTuber Ketwolski has produced a series of fan made Daystrom Institute library files covering everything from Cardassians to the Temporal Cold War. These files are both fun and full of fascinating background information that both casual and long time devoted Trekkies will find interesting.

Today Ketwolski is looking at the mysterious Breen Confederacy of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.  

Don’t underestimate the Breen.

The Breen Confederacy are such an interesting species because of the mystery that surrounds them. With most Star Trek alien species we are quickly introduced to the species, its culture, and even its motivation. With the Breen Confederacy we don’t get to learn any of these things. Kingons we know are motivated by honor and wanting honorable battle, we know Cardassians are authoritarian, we know the Borg want to assimilate, we even know the Federation wants to explore, but we don’t know why the Breen venture into the stars.

The Breen’s refrigeration suits could have been simply explained by having an icy planet, but instead we find out their planet is in the words of Weyoun quite pleasant. It’s just another question that goes unanswered. I like to think that the Breen planet was icy, and that with pollution they warmed it to a mild temperature, forcing them into the refrigeration suits. That of course is purely speculation.

Perhaps Star Trek: Discovery will shed more light on the might and mysterious and fearsome Breen Confederacy.
