Comedian Rainn Wilson has joined the cast of Star Trek: Discovery as a classic Star Trek character.
WARNING: THIS POST MAY CONTAIN STAR TREK: DISCOVERY SPOILERS!
CBS has announced that Rainn Wilson has beamed aboard Star Trek: Discovery and he’s going to be playing a classic Star Trek villain. When you see Rainn Wilson who is the first Star Trek: The Original Series villain to pop into you mind? It’s galactic grifter Harry Mudd of course!
I can’t think of anyone better suited to play Harcourt Fenton Mudd (outside Roger C. Carmel) than Rainn Wilson, this is fantastic casting.

Dwight Schrute is probably one of those Babylon 5 weirdos though.
Mudd is a recurring nuisance to Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Original Series. He’s the most devious con man in all of Trek, besides maybe Quark.
We know that Mudd had a criminal history before he ever ran into Kirk and the Enterprise however, so there’s plenty for a younger Mudd to be up to. There’s no doubt that a younger Mudd will be up to the same kinds of cons and tricks that the older Mudd got into. The crew of the Discovery is going to have their hands full with this one.
We were really hoping that Discovery would use its proximity to Star Trek: The Original Series to bring back some classic Trek characters and species. Mudd is an excellent choice because of how much his episodes are. Rainn Wilson playing Mudd is just mint icing on the cellular peptide cake.
