SDCC 2019: Star Trek Universe Panel Roundup

We round up all the reveals from the Star Trek Universe panel that lit up Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con including details on Picard and Lower Decks.

Thank you San Diego! Its been a wild ride!

That’s my feeling this morning following the Hall H Star Trek Universe panel that occurred on Saturday at San Diego Comic Con 2019. We knew that it was going to be good, but this good, I don’t think so. I feel like I have won the nerd lottery and even with the exciting news of Marvel’s Phase Four announcements, nothing compares to the feeling of watching the full trailer and the impending return of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in 2020’s Star Trek: Picard

Although they only had an hour long slot they managed to cram so much exciting news and announcements in such a short space of time. Due to the time constraints it was unfortunate that we didn’t get any news or updates on the planned Michele Yeoh led Section 31 series or the other animated show in the works, the as yet untitled Nickelodeon series.

With so much news coming out of the panel, we here at Redshirts have compiled a roundup of the announcements and some reactions from Twitter.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 3

The crew of Discovery are truly going where no one has gone before in the Star Trek universe and they wont be going it alone, as new character Cleveland Booker, played by British actor David Ajala, will be joining them in Season 3. Although we did get a little plot tease and some new images not much else was revealed about the third entry into the series that launched the modern Star Trek Universe.

Star Trek: Short Treks

What started off as a bit of an experiment and an attempt to fill some time between Season 1 and 2 of Discovery, Star Trek: Short Treks has gone on to become a well received and welcome addition to the Star Trek Universe and coming soon we will have six more to look forward to.

Alex Kurtzman had this to say on the Short Treks announcement

More from Redshirts Always Die

"“We knew [after season one of Discovery] we wouldn’t drop [season two] right away. We wanted to give ourselves some time so, we built these Short Treks. They were these wonderful little meals, but then the reveal was that some of them connected to the main story of season two. Some of the [new] Short Treks will involve Spock, Number One and Pike. Two of them are animated. One of them will be directed by [composer] Michael Giacchino. The last one will be a Picard teaser, and it will give you a sense of some of the background that happened to Jean-Luc 15 years before the series. Everything connects, but they’re very fun standalone stories.”"

So we get the return of Pike, Spock and Number One which will delight fans as they were the highlight of Discovery Season 2. Its worth pointing out as well that during the panel, Kurtzman asked those in attendance if they would like to see a Pike and company spin off and needless to say the reaction was very positive.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

As much as I am looking forward to Picard and season three of Discovery, I have to admit I am almost looking forward to Star Trek: Lower Decks just as much. I am a huge fan of Rick and Morty and when it was announced that Mike McMahan (co-creator of Rick and Morty) was going to be a part of it, well I was sold, even before I had seen anything of the new animated Trek show.

With yesterdays reveal I have to say I am very happy. Style wise its not too far a departure from what Rick and Morty offer which for me is a good thing, I love the look of the characters and the animation style, along with the humor should transfer over nicely to a Star Trek setting. Along with an exciting voice cast that include geek alum such as Jerry O’Connell (Sliders) and Jack Quad who is soon to be featured in alternative super-hero show The Boys.

Star Trek: Picard

Wow. That’s all I can say. Well its not really as this wouldn’t be much of an update if I didn’t say anything else…. but WOW.

They certainly saved the best till last during this panel and Hall H went wild when Sir Patrick Stewart emerged with fellow cast members to talk ship on the latest entry in Jean-Luc Picard’s story.

We had the amazing trailer that shed some new light on where we find Picard at this stage of his life, as well as the reveal that certain past crew members of Captain Picard’s will be making an appearance in the new series.

Its safe to say that in the days since the trailer has been released the internet has gone manic with speculation and adulation.

It truly is an exciting time to be a Star Trek fan and no doubt this is not the end of the news or information to come our way. We will keep you updated as soon as any new updates come out!
