An entertainment insider known for getting the scoop right is claiming that ViacomCBS has three new Star Trek spinoffs in the works.

Star Trek already has three shows airing, with a fourth and fifth on the way and a sixth rumored to be in the works. There’s plenty of Star Trek television, not to mention the endless podcasts, the classic television series, and of course the films. So it should surprise no one to hear that the latest Star Trek rumor has ViacomCBS working on three more series.

According to Twitter user Daniel Ritchman, via his Patreon, Star Trek is working on three more series, though what they are is still unclear at the moment. Rumors claim that two of them could be a Starfleet Academy series, and Ceti Alpha Vi miniseries focusing on a young Khan Noonian Singh. Though those aren’t “spinoffs”, so they probably aren’t the shows being discussed.

ViacomCBS has fallen off hard in the streaming wars, falling behind Disney+, Peacock, and other streaming services. They’re going to be doing anything they can to generate revenue in order to catch up, like putting on the Saints and Bears NFL game on Nickelodeon.

It’s very likely that they’re going to double down hard on Star Trek, as it’s really the only cross-brand franchise they have. With Disney+ ramping up the number of Star War shows, you can expect ViacomCBS to do the same with Star Trek and match them series for series.

After all, franchise properties are the big-ticket items for television series.

As far as what these shows could be, we’ve heard rumors for a Section 31 series, and a possible Harry Mudd spin-off as well. Those aren’t really making any real headway at the moment at last check but COVID-19 has sent everything into a tizzy.

There’s still no release date for Strange New Worlds, and Discovery was supposed to shoot two seasons-back-to-back but the pandemic affected all of that. It’s very possible that some series or even seasons get cut due to the financial losses accrued by the pandemic. Don’t be surprised if one Star Trek series at least gest axed due to COVID.

Right now the spinoffs are just rumors but they come from a fairly credible source, so keep an eye out for anything more substantial.
