Review: Resident Alien season 1, episode 1 – “Pilot”

Official Score
Acting: There isn’t one bad actor in this series. Not one. Sure, Alan Tudyk and Sara Tomko steal the show but the rest of the cast really hit their roles exceptionally. The timing and reactions by everyone work, maybe none more so than the youngest actor, Judah Prehn, who plays Max. The only person who can see through Hah Re’s disguise. The scenes with Max and an alien Tudyk are among the best in the show. Must be seen to truly enjoy.
Grade:5/5
Writing: The dialogue and plot are a bit predictable at points, but that’s acceptable because it’s a brand new show, and it’s not only trying to introduce the concept of the show but the tone as well. You don’t want to overly complicated things so soon. It’s like a date, you start off easy. That said, there could’ve been some tightening with the dialogue, as it felt a bit short of what it should’ve been. But not by much.
Grade: 4/5
Design: The look of the alien is based on the comic, Resident Alien, which contrasts very well with the idyllic mountain town in Colorado. If the acting, writing, and overall appeal of the show don’t hook you, the scenic views the show takes advantage of will. Not sure if it’s actually the mountains and forest of Vancouver (where they filmed) or just a really nice set but either way, it’s awesome.
Grade:5/5
Special Effects: Not much was used, and admittedly the space ship CGI scenes aren’t the best. That doesn’t mean the show fails, as the alien design and look is astounding. The crew did a great job making Tudyk’s alien self look fantastic. It’s both super cool and super gross to look at all once.
Grade: 4/5
Enjoyability: It’s fantastic. I enjoyed every minute and immediately wanted to re-watch it just to live in the world they created a little longer.
