Prodigy and Discovery return

Star Trek’s Prodigy and Discovery took a short hiatus after the start of their first and fourth season’s respectively. For Prodigy, the break was expected, as they produced only what was originally ordered. They were then picked up for a further 10 episodes to close out their first season, which already had 10 episodes produced. They were also picked up for a second season as well, for presumably another 20 episodes.

Discovery’s hiatus was a bit more jarring, as it was expected that the series would run uninterrupted. As there have been rumors of pre-production issues that resulted in the show going over budget and forcing the fourth season to be scaled down by several episodes, a hiatus wasn’t too shocking if ViacomCBS was worried about padding the release window of the new Star Trek shows.

Prodigy returns very soon on Jan. 6, 2022, while Discovery will return from their mid-season break after that in February. It’s a bit confusing as to why ViacomCBS interrupted the first season of one show, to push in the fourth season of another, only to then interrupt that show for the former.

Regardless of the odd airing order, both shows are about ready to come back.
