Star Trek: Strange New Worlds debuts on Paramount Plus on May 5th.

It seems like it’s been forever since it was announced that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was in production. Even longer for us to learn all the stars in the series as well as the characters. And though we’ve gotten the briefest glimpse of what lies ahead, it was nothing concrete. So, finally, after an interminable amount of time, Paramount Plus shared the first teaser trailer for the series, giving us a better look at what the future holds, even if it is the briefest of glimpses.

There aren’t any plot details in the trailer, but there is a shot of Anson Mount with longer hair and a beard, which might signal that he’s been out of Starfleet for a while. He’s in the mountains, surrounded by snow and horses, and then a voice is heard saying, “Chris, I need you back, Captain.”  Following that is a shot of a shuttle leaving the snowy landscape.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be set before Star Trek: The Original Series.

Along with those glimpses of what’s going on with Captain Pike, we see (and hear) the old communicator from Star Trek: The Original Series, catch the team in away suits with a female voiceover talking about the beauty of space, and there are beautiful shots of planets, alien worlds, the stars, a boy/teen with this back to the camera, and then the glorious glimpse of the Enterprise as it warps across the galaxy.

It’s not much to go on right now, but it does establish how beautiful this series is going to be. Even though it’s set before Captain Kirk took the helm of the Enterprise, it’s not limited by the 1960s budget or abilities. And the studio clearly has spent some money on this show. In less than two minutes, it sets the tone for a series that is going to introduce new worlds, share the galaxy with us, and take us back to the days when Star Trek was in its infancy. It’s an enticing look at what’s to come.
