Star Trek: Picard is bringing the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation back.

With the announcement that the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation will appear on the final season of Star Trek: Picard came a flurry of tweets from fans expressing their excitement. The actors weighed in, too, as did executive producer and showrunner, Terry Matalas, and one tweet in particular has raised all kinds of question marks and has stoked the fires of fans’ hopes for an Admiral Picard and Dr. Crusher romance.

When one fan became emotional over the news that Gates McFadden would be returning to her role as Dr. Beverly Crusher, Matalas responded with a confirmation that we would see Beverly, but added, “you’re not ready.”

Dr. Crusher’s return to Star Trek: Picard has fans ever hopeful for a romantic resolution.

At the beginning of season two, the series set up a possible romance between Admiral Picard and Laris, the Romulan housekeeper at Chateau Picard. However, Picard wasn’t ready to commit and withdrew from Laris before either one admitted their feelings. So that was left quite open-ended when he had to leave with his crew to restore the timeline.

But long before Laris, there was Dr. Crusher, and she and Jean-Luc Picard shared a long history fraught with romantic undertones. They had the quintessential will-they-won’t-they relationship that ended up not going anywhere. That hasn’t stopped fans from hoping, and, as shown on Twitter, most of them are, at the very least, hoping for a resolution to the unfulfilled romance that took place aboard the Enterprise.

But Matalas’ tweet hints that there’s a lot more in store for Dr. Crusher when she rejoins Admiral Picard, and even if this doesn’t involve a romance, fans are anxious to see what the doctor has been up to for the past twenty years. And Matalas’ warning has only upped our interest and anxiety. Though we’ll have to wait until next year, we can’t promise to wait patiently.
