Tawny Newsome of Star Trek: Lower Decks is multi-talented.

Tawny Newsome leads a star-studded cast in Star Trek: Lower Decks. While names like Jack Quad and Jerry O’Connell may be names most will recognize, Newsome, Noel Wells, Eugene Cordero and the rest of the cast have long proven to be just as talented. For Newsome, however, fans may not know how talented she is.

A long-time standout in the world of comedy for years, her career blew up in 2020 when she landed a spot on the Netflix series Space Force, as well as on Lower Decks. Since then her profile has picked up and launched but fans are still finding out new things about her every day.

For instance, did you know that not only is she a talented musician but she was actually part of a Talking Heads cover band called This Must Be The Band? That nugget was revealed by the band Five Year Mission shortly after the conclusion of Star Trek: Mission Chicago.

Five Year Mission were actually invitees to the event and played sets in between panels. They were eventually joined by Newsome, who took over the lead vocals spot and performed the Talking Head’s song “Psycho Killer” alongside Five Year Mission.

The video was captured by Five Year Mission themselves and shows Newsome killing it on vocals. The quality isn’t the best, admittedly, as it takes an entire setup to record live music properly, but you can absolutely tell how talented she is just from this one video.

For those new to Five Year Mission, they’re clearly a Star Trek cover band out of Indiana and have been together as a group for 12 years, forming in 2010. Unlike other bands that live in the Trek bubble, like Boldy Go!, Five Year Mission is on a quest to write a song for every episode of Star Trek.

Kinda following in the path set forth by cover bands like The Megas, a Mega Man cover band that makes songs to classic video game tunes, mostly from the Mega Man franchise.

This isn’t Newsome’s only experience in a band, as she’s the lead singer for Four Lost Souls.

As for Five Year Mission, Newsome isn’t even the first Star Trek alumni to perform with them, as Tim Russ (Tuvok from Star Trek: Voyager) has also performed with the band. You can find out more about the band from their website, FiveYearMission.net.
