Fans missing Star Trek: Deep Space Nine may get a bit of nostalgia soon.

The trio of Star Terk shows from the 80s and 90s are among the most heralded and respected in the franchise’s history. The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager were standard bearers for some time. That’s part in parcel of why the Next Generation crew and Voyager have been well represented in the new era of Star Trek.

The entire core cast of Next Generation has returned, while Kathryn Janeway, Chakotay, Seven of Nine, and Tom Paris have all returned in various shows.

Of those three shows, however, really no one from Deep Space Nine has had a major role in any new show. We saw a Quark reference in Lower Decks, but I think that may have been it from that series. So when the idea of bringing these characters back was brought up at San Diego Comic-Con, series head Alex Kurtzman was a bit coy (via TrekMovie.com)

"I’m trying to answer your question without revealing anything. I think you’re always having conversations about the history of Star Trek. And obviously, Sisko is a critical, critical figure for everybody. So conversations definitely have been had."

This isn’t surprising, as Lower Decks is building their promotional material for season three around the show returning to Deep Space Nine, so it makes sense that Kurtzman would be coy. As for fans getting to revisit those characters beyond a one-off?

"What I’ll tell you is that, for us, we don’t want to just launch into something without going, “Oh, we have now a new idea.” A new reason to do it, a way to turn it in a new direction so that it’s not just repeating the thing you’ve seen before, but it’s also honoring the thing that you love. So if we ever do go down that road, other than what we’re already doing on Lower Decks, I think we would all want to make sure that it was coming from that place of being able to tell a new story while honoring the old one."

Hopefully, Lower Decks brings in a few names into Deep Space Nine

With the Lower Decks series going to Deep Space Nine for the third season, the hope is we get some returning faces. After all, the comic book line is bringing back Captain Benjamin Sisko for a brand new comic book.

So it would make sense to add a little synergy, even if the comic book isn’t canon.

The expectation will be Quark and Kira Nerys, as they’re the two most likely to still be there, but anyone else would be fine, even Garak.
